The Defender Rings are created to be a self-defense weapon for women that can be worn every day in the form of a ring.
First off, I want to give a big thank you to Defender Ring for sending me their Sandblast X, 14K Gold Defender Ring.
When I first opened the package, I was immediately amazed by the quality of the ring. I could tell that this ring was well made just by placing it in the palm of my hand; the ring has bulk to it. The Sandblast X, 14K Gold is made of 14K yellow gold-plated stainless steel. Unlike the rest of the ring, the sphere-shaped topper is plated in matte 14K yellow gold. The Sandblast X, 14K Gold Defender Ring is meant to symbolize “radiance and confidence.”[1] I can tell you that when I put this ring on, a big smile came over my face and I felt confident.
This defender ring is not only a beautiful piece of jewelry, but it is a form of protection. Unscrewing the topper – which takes less than three seconds – reveals a 10mm X 4mm spike shaped blade. This blade is sharp enough to pierce through human skin and inflict enough pain and damage to the attacker to where it could buy you time to get away. Once the attacker is struck by the spike, their DNA (blood, skin, etc.) would be collected. Having the DNA of your attacker will make it easier for your local police department to track down the attacker and make an arrest. Hopefully, no one ever has to be in a situation where they have to fight for their life, but if this happens to you, knowing how to defend yourself is vital. Whether you are trained in self-defense or not, the defender ring could help you escape when being attacked.
Since the spike is said to be able to pierce through human skin, I wanted to test it out. For safety reasons, I did not test the sharpness of the spike on human skin. Instead, I tested it on a soda can and a plastic bottle. The spike was able to pierce through the soda can without any difficulties.
The plastic bottle had a little more resistance towards the spike. However, it did manage to go through the bottle. After I punched the plastic bottle with the ring, the point of the spike did curve a little bit (shown below). Even though the point did curve, the spike is still sharp and the end point of the curve now acts as a hook; it makes it easier to dig into whatever or whoever is on the receiving end of the blade. Given that the tip of the spike did curve, I cannot guarantee that the spike would be able to last through multiple blows to an attacker without being damaged.
Overall, I am pleased with the Sandblast X, 14K Gold Defender Ring not only for its beautiful appearance, but for its ability to puncture what is struck. The Defender Ring Company promises its customers that they will be able to defend themselves “by punching, slicing, or striking an attacker with your fists to rip human skin, draw blood, inflict damage, and collect the DNA of an attacker.”[2] Although I did not test out the ring on a human, based on the tests I conducted, I have no doubt that the blade will be able to rip through human skin. Despite the slight curving of the spike, I would still recommend this product to people who are looking for a way to protect themselves from harm. I will continue to wear my Defender Ring because it makes me feel safer when going out into the world.
